Etiquette

Outlines the key rules and practices for effective radio communication

Radio discipline is critical in all operational environments. Comms must be concise, accurate, and calm under pressure. ION operators follow strict comms etiquette to maintain clarity in the field, avoid confusion during engagements, and ensure mission continuity in degraded environments.

Basic Rules

  • Use brevity, say only what needs to be said.
  • Pause before you speak, think, then transmit.
  • Sometimes keep it professional, minimal chatter, a few slangs sometimes on channels.
  • Acknowledge every message when appropriate.

Frequency Discipline

  • Sections operate on section-level short-range (SR) frequencies.
  • Command-level (LR) net is reserved for section leaders, command, and in-need.
  • Operators must check frequencies before transmitting.

Things To Avoid

  • Avoid saying "Repeat" unless you're calling for fire support.
  • Don’t speak over others unless it's a priority interrupt (e.g. TIC).
  • Avoid unnecessary identifiers, keep it mission-focused.

Comms discipline keeps operators alive and missions intact. Speak smart, speak clear, speak only when you must.
